Things to Know Before you Start
- You must provide your own laptop computer with a
compatible network card and your own browser software.
The library provides no guarantee that you can connect
or that your equipment will be compatible.
- Usernames and passwords will change each day. There
is no time limit.
- The library staff is not able to provide technical
assistance for any equipment or connection to the
system.
- It is important for you to know that the library
network is not secure and that you must provide your own
virus protection.
- The Allentown Public Library is not responsible for
damage to your computer or computer files due to your
use of the wireless network.
- All Internet use through the library wireless
network will be filtered using the same criteria as the
adult filters on the library's computers.
- Printing is not available through the library's
network printer for wireless users.
- If you choose to plug your computer into an
electrical outlet in the building there will be a charge
of $2.00.
- Bookmark the library's homepage,
www.allentownpl.org;
you will be able to use the online catalog, the
library's online subscription databases and POWER
LIBRARY from the library homepage as long as you are
logged into APL-Gate.
Making the Connection
Connect Using Windows 2000 and Windows XP
If your wireless card is not already
configured:
· Click on
“Control Panel”
· Double click
“Network and Dial-up Connections” or “Network Connections”
· Right click on
“Wireless Network Connection” or “Local Area Connection”
· Click on
“Properties”
· Click “Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)” > Properties
· Check “Obtain an
IP address automatically”
· Click “OK”
· Double click :
“Network and Dial-up Connections” or “Network Connections”
· Right click
“Wireless Network Connection,” then click “Properties”
· Check “Use
Windows to configure my wireless network settings”
Connect Using Macintosh OS 8/9
If your wireless card is not already
configured:
· Select Apple
Menu>Control Panel>TCP/IP
· Connect using
“AirPort or other WiFi Ethernet”
· Configure “Using
DHCP server”
· Leave “Name
Server” and “Additional Search” domains blank
Connect Using Macintosh OS X
· Select “Apple
Menu” >“System Preference,” then “Network”
· Select TCP/IP
tab and configure “Using DHCP”
· Leave “Domain
Name Servers” and “Search Domains” blank
Internet Explorer Users
- Click “Tools”>Internet Options>Connections
- Make sure “Always dial my default connection” is not
checked
General Troubleshooting
- You may have to turn off your personal firewall
